Is Your Vehicle Ready for a Montana Winter?

Good Carma by Peak Auto Repair

Recently, a friend headed to Yellowstone with her family. They wanted to get the trip in “before the weather got bad.”

Montana had other plans.

An early storm dropped significant snowfall and blocked traffic for hours on I-90 at Homestake Pass. Fortunately, her vehicle was in good condition for the road conditions, and she had a full tank of gas. But afterward, she mentioned something she hadn’t thought to bring: her winter emergency kit.

It’s an easy thing to overlook when the roads are dry as you pull out of the driveway. A few bottles of water, an extra blanket, and a way to charge your phone might not seem important—until you’re sitting on a mountain pass, waiting for traffic to move.

That conversation got me thinking about the things we can check before winter puts them to the test. Whether you’re planning a family holiday trip or driving across Missoula to work, here’s where we recommend starting.

Battery and charging system: will it start—and keep charging?

A battery can start your car today and still struggle when temperatures drop. Even a healthy battery can become discharged if the charging system isn’t doing its job.

At Peak, we can check your battery’s state of charge, assess its health and available cranking power, and test whether the alternator is providing the charging output your vehicle needs while running.

That gives us a better picture than simply checking whether the engine starts.

Lights: see the road—and help others see you

During winter, more of our driving happens in the dark. Working lights matter on the morning commute, the drive home, and those long stretches of Montana highway.

Peak can inspect your exterior lights, check headlight condition, and assess their alignment. Properly aimed headlights help illuminate the road without directing excessive glare into oncoming traffic.

Tires: give yourself a fighting chance

Your tires connect everything your vehicle does to the road—including stopping.

We can inspect tread depth, uneven wear, visible damage, and whether your tires are appropriate for the conditions you expect to drive in. We also check inflation against your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended cold tire pressure.

Peak Auto Repair does not sell tires, but we can inspect them and recommend replacement when needed. We can also rotate suitable tires and adjust their pressure.

Good tires help, but slick roads still require slower speeds and more stopping distance.

Brakes: stopping comes first

In my opinion, stopping is the most important thing your vehicle can do.

Winter driving leaves less room for problems. If your brakes are already making noise, pulling to one side, vibrating, or feeling different through the pedal, have them inspected before conditions get worse.

Peak can check brake condition and help you understand what needs attention. Reliable brakes and appropriate tires work together; neither can eliminate the limits of traction on snow and ice.

Cooling system: yes, it matters in winter

Talking about engine cooling during winter might seem strange. But in most gasoline and diesel vehicles, heat from the engine’s coolant is also what warms the cabin and supplies heat for windshield defrosting.

The system needs to protect against freezing, maintain proper engine temperature, and help keep you comfortable with a clear view of the road.

At Peak, we can check coolant condition and freeze protection, look for leaks, and check heater and defroster operation. We’ll also check wipers and washer fluid—small things that matter when road spray covers the windshield.

Pack for the weather you might encounter

My friend’s Yellowstone trip was a reminder that winter preparation includes what you carry with you.

Keep a few essentials in the vehicle:

  • Drinking water and shelf-stable snacks.
  • A first-aid kit and any necessary medications.
  • An extra blanket or sleeping bag and warm clothing.
  • A flashlight, ice scraper, snow brush, and small shovel.
  • A phone charging cable and charged portable power bank.

Check road conditions before leaving, and keep plenty of fuel in the tank. An emergency kit can make an unexpected delay more manageable.
